Roy’s world: Hawaii’s famed chef expands namesake restaurants to Turtle Bay on Oahu’s North Shore
One of Hawaii’s best-known chefs has just added Oahu’s North Shore to his restaurant locations.
Chef Roy Yamaguchi’s new Roy’s Beach House is located steps from the surf at Turtle Bay Resort, about an hour’s drive north of Honolulu International Airport.
According to a news release, the 140-seat restaurant re-creates the ambience of a luxury home’s living room, interspersing teak sofas and lounge chairs with traditional dining room furniture. The space features indoor and outdoor seating.
The restaurant, which opened Aug. 3, emphasizes freshly caught fish, offering specialties like a blackened ahi appetizer ($22) and a misoyaki butterfish entree ($38).
For the first time in Yamaguchi’s nearly 30 years as a chef, he has created a Beach House take-away menu intended for hungry or thirsty beachgoers; the soon-to-open walk-up window will serve lighter fare such as sandwiches.
Overseeing the new restaurant is Oahu native Gordon Hopkins, the newly-appointed executive chef who has been cooking for Yamaguchi since the first Roy’s opened in 1988 in Hawaii Kai, about 10 miles east of Waikiki.
If you want a spot at the table, reservations are required. The Beach house is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lunch, and 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner. The takeout counter is open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
There are now nearly 30 restaurants in the Roy’s family in the U.S. and Japan.
