Try a free day at more than 30 museums in Southern California
Start your year with a cultural immersion when more than 30 museums in Southern California open their doors for free. Museums Free-for-All encourages visitors to try out a new museum or go site-hopping on Jan. 29.
The deal: Plan your free day by checking out the list of participating museums. At most sites, such as the Autry Museum of the American West in Griffith Park ($14) and the Pasadena Museum of California Art in Pasadena ($7), you can just show up.
If you want to visit Descanso Gardens in La Canada-Flintridge ($9 for adults), the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades (it’s free but charges $15 for parking), the Natural History Museum of L.A. County in Exposition Park ($12) and a few others, you’ll be required to register online before you go.
When: Free admission applies on Jan. 29. (One museum, the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey, which is closed Sundays, will honor free day on Jan. 28.)
Details: You can save on parking by taking Metro ($1.75 per ride) to some sites; for example, the Expo Line goes to museums at Exposition Park. If you’re busy Jan. 29, find monthly free days at area museums on the website.
The free day applies to general admission, but not to activities like Imax films or special exhibitions that require a separate ticket.
