Boutique hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin opens with $119 rooms

The newly opened Tilden Hotel offers room prices as low as $119 in the Tenderloin, one of San Francisco’s sketchiest neighborhoods. In a city where the average hotel room costs $397 a night, it’s a steal — as long as you’re OK with staying on the gritty side of town.

The deal: The Tilden, which opened in October, describes itself as “a timeless San Francisco hotel and a pillar of the historic Tenderloin district,” according to its website. The 118-room former Mark Twain Hotel has been renovated with a minimalist look (think cherry wood details and white walls) in a building that dates to 1928.

The hotel has a cafe, plus a bar and eatery, the Douglas Room, slated to come online in December.

Gentrification of the Tenderloin is a hot-button issue in San Francisco. A recent development proposal seeks to create a shopping district with stores such as Topshop and Ralph Lauren, and rename the area Union Square West.

Critics decry the effort to erase the longtime working-class neighborhood and want to keep the area’s seedy rep intact.

The Grand Opening Deal features room prices starting at $119 through the end of the year and $159 from January through March, excluding tax and fees.

When: The offer is good for stays through March 31 and must be booked by Dec. 31.

Tested: I checked online and found availability for a $119 room from Thanksgiving (Nov. 24) through Nov. 27. In looking at the hotel’s room prices, the cheapest can be found in December and early January.
