Take a New Year’s Eve train to see northern lights in Alaska
Get into training this winter on the Alaska Railroad with a Winter Escape Getaway, offered now through mid-May. The snowy train trips are a result of expanded service at Christmas and New Year’s, as well as in February and March.
For those looking for a New Year’s Eve tour, the Aurora Winter Train can be booked for a Dec. 31 departure. It leaves Anchorage for a one-night stay in Fairbanks, known for its aurora borealis displays and “flight-seeing” opportunities above the Arctic Circle. Travelers can return by air to Anchorage or take the train back on Jan. 4. Other winter holiday trips are also available.
Dates: The Aurora Winter Train travels north from Anchorage on Dec. 27 and 31, and Jan. 3. It travels south from Fairbanks on Dec. 28, Jan. 1 and 4. See website for complete schedule.
