Clydesdales and apple cider at these Savor the Central Coast tours
Savor the Central Coast in September gathers well-known chefs and wine experts to showcase the foods and wines of San Luis Obispo County.
As an added bonus, those who want a closer look at the area’s fresh cuisine may sign up for day tours of farms, wineries, even a Clydesdale ranch with experts to guide you.
Sunset magazine editors Sara Schneider, Margo True and Peter Fish serve as hosts for some of the 10 Adventure Tours offered, along with chef Yousef Ghalaini of Fig restaurant in Santa Monica and chef and author Joanne Weir.
The one-of-a-kind experiences include visiting hundreds of Clydesdale horses at Covell’s Ranch in Cambria. Guests who go will be served a picnic with local wines and hosted by wine editor Schneider.
Other trips include a trip to Bristols Cider House in Atascadero with Schneider to sample apple ciders and tour pressing rooms, and a visit to explore Halter Ranch Vineyard in Paso Robles with a lunch prepared by Ghalaini.
If you want to catch your own lunch, you can grab a rod and go on a kayak tour of Morro Bay’s estuary. You’ll learn how to fillet the fish and enjoy a lunch overlooking the bay.
Or you can take a private tour of Hearst Castle in San Simeon, then lunch with travel editor Fish and sample wines from the Hearst Ranch Winery.
Trips run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 and 25 and cost $85 per person. (You don’t have to attend the wine-food festival to take the day trips.)
Savor the Central Coast is scheduled for Sept. 26-27 at Santa Margarita Ranch in Santa Margarita with a lineup of cooking demonstrations and wines. One-day passes cost $85 and a weekend pass costs $150.
