So many horses, so much Hollywood glamour at Del Mar’s Bing Crosby racing season
The Bing Crosby Season will return to the Del Mar racetrack for its second year starting Oct. 29, bringing with it tons of Hollywood and dozens of ponies.
The five-week horse racing session at the track near San Diego evokes Hollywood’s glory days with racing stakes named for 1940s actors such as Betty Grable, Cary Grant and Jimmy Durante.
You can trot out the vintage glam, too, to bring back “the cool Del Mar vibe” on opening day with a Hollywood Fashion Contest.
Prizes are awarded for the most glamorous look, the best dressed couple or most debonair man, and the best celebrity look-alike. Grand prize winners will receive two nights at the L’Auberge Del Mar plus dinner at Kitchen 1540 and other extras.
During the fall season, about 160 races -- including Breeders’ Cup contests on Oct. 30 and 31 -- will take place Thursdays through Sundays until Nov. 29. Del Mar will host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for the first time in 2017.
You can spend Thanksgiving with the ponies, participate in a one-mile fun race in the backstretch and enjoy a three-course brunch at the Turf Club for $100 a person. The season includes two free concerts: a Reggae Fest with Iration on Nov. 21 and Sublime With Rome on Nov. 28.
