Savor Colorado’s fall colors, astounding rock walls, in a $90 room
Far View Lodge in Mesa Verde National Park lives up to its name. From its location in southwestern Colorado, you get wide panoramic views that extend to Arizona and Utah. Just in time for autumn, the lodge is extending its season and will stay open until Oct. 24.
The location is secluded, yet close enough to the park's astounding red rock walls and more than ancient cliff dwellings. It was slated to close for the season on Oct. 17.
The lodge is a contemporary building with 150 rooms and is located about 15 miles inside the park. No TVs or cellphone service here; it's all about experiencing the surrounding nature and wildlife.
Cottonwood trees, oak brush and of course aspens pop with color during October. From here you can drive parts of the 233-mile loop through the San Juan Mountains, which isn't far from the lodge.
The lodge features simple Western design where you can hike, tour the cliff dwellings and stargaze by night from balconies at the secluded site. There also are tent sites at Morefield Campground that will remain open through Oct. 18.
Rooms cost about $91 on average during the month of October.
