USC’s Silas Redd says he won’t travel to Hawaii
USC tailback Silas Redd, who had knee surgery last spring and has not participated in contact drills during training camp, will not accompany the Trojans to their opener at Hawaii.
On Monday night, Redd posted on his Twitter feed: “Gonna hurt to not travel with my squad tomorrow but I know y’all gonna handle business in a few day! I’m working to get back 100%.”
Third-year sophomore Tre Madden and freshman Justin Davis are expected to get the bulk of the carries when the Trojans play Thursday night at Aloha Stadium.
Redd’s absence from the opener would not be a surprise. Coach Lane Kiffin said last week that he was not sure if Redd, last season’s leading rusher, would be ready for the opener.
After practice Monday afternoon, Kiffin said there are “a lot” of players who did not practice because of injuries.
“I’ve got a feeling there’s going to be a number of guys not even making this trip,” he said.
Linebacker Morgan Breslin also is among players who have not practiced.
Kiffin said the Trojans could take 80 players to Hawaii. They are scheduled to depart after practice Tuesday.
He said some decisions might not be made until after Tuesday’s workout “to see how a couple guys move around.”
“If we rule them out at that point, for the most part, we’re going to leave those guys and leave them here to rehab and get ready for the next game,” he said.
Etc.
Senior linebacker Devon Kennard, junior linebacker Hayes Pullard, junior receiver Marqise Leeand junior center Marcus Martin were voted captains by their teammates. ... Kiffin reiterated that when it comes to playing time for quarterbacks Max Wittek and Cody Kessler, “we’re not going to put anything set in stone about plays, or quarters or series.” He added, “We’ll get a feel for how the game is going and make decisions as we go.” ... Running back John Akiba, safety John Auran, receiver Cody Skene and linebacker Kyle Yatabe were awarded scholarships for the fall, Kiffin said. ... Connor Sullivan, a walk-on quarterback who left the team before training camp, has rejoined the Trojans.
