Arizona State upsets No. 7 UCLA, 38-23

Arizona State played the spoiler to No. 7 UCLA’s perfect season, defeating the Bruins, 38-23, on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

The Bruins, who played from behind nearly the entire game, entered the fourth quarter trailing the Sun Devils, 29-10.

Quarterback Josh Rosen, who completed 22 of 40 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, opened a 70-yard, six-play scoring drive to open the fourth with passes of 18 and 19 yards to receivers Thomas Duarte and Jordan Payton.

Then, Paul Perkins carried the ball the rest of the way for a touchdown with a 29-yard run followed by two jabs into the end zone on carries of three and one yard. But, the Bruins failed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 29-16.

Perkins carried the ball 63 yards on 18 tries. Nate Starks chipped in with 23 yards in six carries.

Linebacker Isaako Savaiinaea intercepted a short toss from Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici on the Sun Devils’ next drive, which helped set up a 17-yard touchdown pass to Duarte to make the score 29-23, with 9 minutes and 19 seconds left in the fourth.

Duarte finished with six catches for 101 yards and two scores.

Arizona State succeeded in burning time off the clock, but was ultimately helped to victory when UCLA snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt for the second safety of the night. Rosen was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone during the first quarter.

The Sun Devils chewed up the clock some more with nine-play drive that ended with a twisting, 23-yard touchdown run by Kalen Ballage, who was pulled backwards into the end zone by his teammates.

Bercovici completed 27 of 44 passes for two touchdowns with one interception and scored on a 34-yard run in the third quarter.

Arizona State (3-2, 1-1 in Pac-12 conference play) hosts Colorado (3-1, 0-0 Pac-12) on Oct. 10. UCLA (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) travels to Stanford (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) on Oct. 15.

UCLA’s defense couldn’t make the stop it needed for a comeback victory against Arizona State. Kaleb Ballage rushes for 29 yards and a touchdown to put the game out of reach for the Bruins, 38-23.

Arizona State went 70 yards in nine plays on the scoring drive.

Classes are finally underway at UCLA, and with that, students who were absent for the first two home games are trickling into the student section.

Several recruits are standing on the sideline to watch warmups, including Theo Howard, a receiver from Westlake High, and Rashard Lawrence, a defensive lineman from Neville High in Monroe, La.

The Bruins improved to 4-0 after a lopsided 56-30 victory over Arizona last week, while the Sun Devils fell to 2-2 after USC defeated them 42-14.
