Pac-12 football: Arizona State stuns No. 6 Oregon; No. 7 Utah rolls past Arizona
Freshman Jayden Daniels completed 22 of 32 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns and Arizona State intercepted two of Justin Herbert’s passes in the fourth quarter, helping the Sun Devils upset No. 6 Oregon 31-28 on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State (6-5, 3-5 Pac-12 Conference) ended Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes and its nine-game winning streak. The Sun Devils snapped a four-game skid with their first victory over a top-five team since Oct. 14, 2017, against then-No. 5 Washington.
Oregon (9-2, 7-1, No. 6 CFP) has clinched the Pac-12 North title and a place in the conference championship game. But the Ducks’ best-case scenario now is likely the Rose Bowl.
“There’s lot of goals that go into a season. One of them was to have ourselves in a situation coming into this game to be part of every conversation and every kind of championship,” Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. “But right now the only conversation that needs to take place for us as a team is the most logical one, that we get back to our process of being 1-0.”
The Sun Devils held on after the Ducks scored three touchdowns in a 6:38 span in the wild fourth quarter.
Oregon, down 24-7 with 8:42 remaining, scored twice on three-play drives. It took the Ducks 59 seconds to make it 24-14 on Cyrus Habibi-Likio’s touchdown run, then 43 seconds to get Herbert’s scoring pass to Johnny Johnson III.
The Buckeyes lock up the Big Ten East title with a 28-17 victory over the Nittany Lions, while LSU routs Arkansas to stay undefeated.
Then, with Arizona State facing third and 16, Daniels hit Brandon Aiyuk in stride for an 81-yard touchdown strike with 3:54 to play.
Herbert and Johnson connected again for a touchdown with 2:04 left, but the Sun Devils were able to run out the clock.
No. 7 Utah 35, at Arizona 7: Zack Moss ran for a season-high 203 yards, and the Utes (10-1, 7-1, No. 7 CFP) rolled to a victory over the Wildcats (4-7, 2-6) in Tucson.
Utah has won seven straight games and is the lone Pac-12 team in serious contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff after No. 6 Oregon lost to Arizona State 31-28 earlier Saturday.
The Utes’ defense was dominant once again, holding an opponent to seven points or fewer for the fifth time in six games. Arizona managed just 196 total yards, and a big chunk of those came in the fourth quarter when mostly backups were playing.
Tyler Huntley completed 19 of 23 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown with one interception. The 5-foot-10, 222-pound Moss barreled through the Wildcats’ defense all night, averaging 7.8 yards per carry.
Tight end Brant Kuithe ran for two touchdowns in two carries. He had just one carry all season before Saturday.
Arizona has lost six straight.
Ryan Day has checked all the boxes so far when it comes to proving Ohio State is worthy of a College Football Playoff berth.
California 24, at Stanford 20: Chase Garbers scored on a 16-yard scramble with 1:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, lifting the Golden Bears (6-5, 3-5) to a win over the Cardinal (4-7, 3-6) in Palo Alto in the 122nd annual Big Game.
Garbers, who was knocked out of last week’s loss to USC, passed for 285 yards and a touchdown and ran for 72 yards in 13 carries. His final run helped Cal end a nine-game losing streak to its Bay Area rivals.
California fans stormed the field after the game, forming a black-and-yellow sea at Stanford Stadium.
More importantly for coach Justin Wilcox’s team, Cal remains in line to secure a bowl bid if it can beat UCLA at the Rose Bowl in the season finale next week.
Davis Mills completed 26 of 35 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown for Stanford. He was intercepted twice.
The loss essentially ends any hope Stanford has of making it to the postseason. The Cardinal have been to a bowl game each of the last 10 seasons.
at Colorado 20, Washington 14: Steve Montez threw for a touchdown and led a long final drive from the shadow of his own end zone to run out the clock as the Buffaloes beat the Huskies in Boulder, Colo.
Alex Fontenot added 105 yards rushing and a touchdown in 24 carries, springing free for a couple of first-down runs on Colorado’s last drive, which ran off the final 5:09. It began at the Buffaloes’ one-yard line and ended with Montez taking a knee at the Huskies’ 18 to run out the final seconds. The victory for Colorado (5-6, 3-5) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Washington (6-5, 3-5).
Montez, a senior playing his final home game, finished 17 of 28 for 223 yards.
Jacob Eason was 21 of 34 for 206 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies, whose offense was disrupted by constant pressure from a Colorado defense that produced five sacks. The Huskies were outgained 430-230, and their running game generated just 32 yards.
Kedon Slovis, the former three-star recruit Helton helped unearth at quarterback, set a school passing record with 515 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-35 win.
at Washington State 54, Oregon State 53: Anthony Gordon led the Cougars on a 10-play, 58-yard touchdown drive with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter to give them a victory over the Beavers in Pullman, Wash.
The win makes Washington State (6-5, 3-5) bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive year.
Gordon went 50 of 70 for 606 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions. He has 45 touchdown passes on the season, breaking Jake Browning and Jared Goff’s Pac-12 single-season passing touchdown record.
Renard Bell had 108 receiving yards and two touchdowns and Dezmon Patmon added 75 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars. Max Borghi rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns.
Jake Luton was 22 for 40 for 408 yards passing and five touchdowns with one interception for Oregon State (5-6, 4-4).
