Pac-12 football: No. 18 Arizona State rallies to beat Washington State; No. 15 Utah routs Oregon State
Jayden Daniels scored on a 17-yard scramble with 34 seconds left and threw three touchdown passes to ailing Brandon Aiyuk, leading No. 18 Arizona State to a 38-34 comeback victory over Washington State on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State (5-1, 2-1 Pacific-12) trailed by three after Blake Mazza made a 31-yard field goal with 2½ minutes left. Taking over at their own 25-yard line, the Sun Devils moved quickly down the field behind Daniels’ pinpoint passing.
The freshman capped the drive with his scramble, helicoptering off a defender into the end zone.
“He’s just phenomenal,” said Arizona State’s Eno Benjamin, who had 137 yards and a touchdown rushing. “The way he goes through practice, you wouldn’t think he’s a freshman.”
Daniels threw for 363 yards on 26-for-36 passing. Aiyuk had seven catches for 196 yards despite an illness that kept him out for portions of the game.
Anthony Gordon threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns, but Washington State (3-3, 0-3) was again let down by its defense.
Trojans coach Clay Helton kept his job but lost a shoe in a 30-27 loss to Notre Dame, though surely there are fans who wish that were the other way around.
No. 15 Utah 52, at Oregon State 7: Zack Moss rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 91-yard scoring run in the opening quarter, and the Utes routed the Beavers.
Moss, who was returning from a shoulder injury, sat out the second half. He is now just 55 yards away from passing Eddie Johnson (1984-88) as Utah’s leading career rusher.
Tyler Huntley threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns for the Utes (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12), who were coming off a bye after downing Washington State to rebound from their lone loss the week before to USC. Moss missed the game against the Cougars with the injury.
Oregon State (2-4, 1-2) was coming off a 48-31 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl last weekend, just its second win this year and first victory over a Pac-12 opponent since last season.
South Carolina upsets No. 3 Georgia 17-10 in double overtime, while No. 6 Oklahoma defeats No. 11 Texas 34-27 in Dallas.
Washington 51, at Arizona 27: Jacob Eason threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, Salvon Ahmed ran for three touchdowns and the Huskies rallied in the second half to beat the Wildcats.
Washington (5-2, 2-2) trailed 17-13 at halftime but responded with two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 27-17 lead.
The Huskies left little doubt about the outcome early in the fourth quarter after two good throws by Eason.
The first was a 39-yard completion to Jordan Chin over the middle of the field, and the second was a 22-yard touchdown to Aaron Fuller on a ball that was perfectly placed over Fuller’s shoulder and led him into the front corner of the end zone.
Arizona (4-2, 2-1) saw its four-game winning streak end. Khalil Tate threw for 184 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He couldn’t find any of his usual running room and finished with minus-28 yards on the ground.
The Wildcats were hurt by four turnovers, including three lost fumbles.
