USC’s Andy Enfield takes shots at opposing coaches in magazine

USC basketball Coach Andy Enfield took shots at former Trojans coach Tim Floyd and UCLA coach Steve Alford in a magazine article that hit newsstands Friday.

Enfield chided Floyd for complaining that the Trojans were trying to coax guard Isaac Hamilton to USC and away from Texas-El Paso, where he was supposed to play basketball as a freshman this season. Enfield also targeted Alford’s coaching record in NCAA tournament games.

The quotes appeared in a profile in Men’s Journal magazine. They were taken, according to a USC spokesman, from a booster club meeting that was supposed to be off the record. Reporter Stephen Rodrick could not be reached for comment.

“Tim Floyd shows up every day at work and realizes he lives in El Paso, Texas,” Enfield was quoted as saying. “I told Tim if I could have all this power to somehow convince a family to do this, why the heck didn’t the kid come last spring when I first got the job?”

Hamilton left UTEP, but joined UCLA’s basketball program, not USC’s.

The jab at Alford came as Enfield noted of his own NCAA tournament record that he had “made it to one Sweet 16 in two years and Alford made it one Sweet 16 in 18 years.”

Enfield said he had no more to say about the article.
