USC wins men’s tennis title and school’s 100th NCAA team championship
USC won its 100th NCAA title Tuesday when the Trojans’ men’s tennis team defeated Oklahoma in the championship match at Athens, Georgia.
USC defeated the Sooners, 4-2, to win its 21st men’s title.
The Trojans finished 32-3 and won their fifth title in six years.
“We’ve had so many great players, and it’s amazing to see a new group stepping up,” Coach Peter Smith told the Associated Press. “Winning one of these is so hard.”
Oklahoma won two doubles matches to earn a point before USC came back to win. USC clinched the title when Max de Vroome won No. 4 singles.
Ray Sarmiento, Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson also won singles matches for the Trojans at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“There’s so much going through your mind, but seeing your teammates right next to the court and your coaches right there to help you through means a lot,” de Vroome told the Associated Press. “There’s no way I could’ve done it without them. Fighting for them, fighting for yourself and just going with the plan and staying disciplined.”
