USC football: Trojans ranked No. 23 in AP poll

USC is back in the rankings.

Voters in the Associated Press media poll rewarded the Trojans for their 20-17 upset victory over Stanford on Saturday by ranking them No. 23 in the weekly poll released Sunday.

Reporters for The Times do not vote in polls.

Alabama became only the seventh team to hold the No. 1 ranking for 13 consecutive weeks to open a season. Florida State remains No. 2, but Baylor moved ahead of Ohio State to No. 3. Oregon rounds out the top five. Only two teams have had longer runs at No. 1 to open a season than the Crimson Tide: USC in 2004 and Florida State in 1999. Each were wire-to-wire No. 1sh.

USC garnered votes after last week’s victory at California, but not enough to crack the top 25.

But the Trojans’ victory over Stanford, its fourth win in a row this season, pushed them to No. 23. Stanford fell from fifth to 10th.

USC, which improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12 Conference, plays at Colorado on Saturday.
