Alison Riske’s U.S. Open run ends in loss to Daniela Hantuchova
NEW YORK -- Alison Riske, a 23-year-old from Pittsburgh ranked 81st in the world and a recipient of a wild card into the main draw of the U.S. Open, made it to the fourth round before former top-10 player Daniela Hantuchova ended the run Monday in a match that was interrupted by rain.
Hantuchova, 30, beat Riske, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Hantuchova will play the winner of a match between second-seeded Victoria Azarenka or 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic. That match was postponed until Tuesday.
The wetness even sent off five-time champion Roger Federer and Tommy Robredo to the Louis Armstrong Court, where Federer hadn’t played since 2002.
In a statement, the United States Tennis Assn., which runs the U.S. Open, explained its decision to postpone the match between Azarenka and Ivanovic:
“Today’s weather forecast called for intermittent rain until 8 p.m. The tournament’s priority was to complete all matches that were in progress and to complete all men’s singles matches scheduled for the day. With the unpredictable weather forecast, the decision was made to release both Ivanovic and Azarenka early enough in the day in order to bring them back as the first match tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m.”
Hantuchova, in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, finished with 15 aces. “It felt really good today,” she said.
