Robert Griffin III: ‘Doctors cleared me to practice’

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III tweeted Monday that doctors have cleared him to practice and he will be ready to go for the start of Redskins training camp.

Griffin is six months removed from major knee surgery to repair ligament tears he suffered in Washington’s playoff loss to Seattle. He sustained torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee.

Griffin said Coach Mike Shanahan is going to “ease me in” at training camp, which stands to reason, especially considering the criticism directed at Shanahan for keeping the limping rookie in the playoff game before the ligaments were damaged more severely.

The Redskins have a capable backup in second-year quarterback Kirk Cousins, who played well in Griffin’s absence earlier last season.

Last season, Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson defied long odds and rushed for 2,000 yards despite suffering a torn ACL the previous December. He wound up being named the NFL’s most valuable player in 2012.
