Rashad Johnson still could lose more of his finger, coach says

One of the most gruesome stories so far this NFL season could actually get even worse.

Arizona Cardinals free safety Rashad Johnson, who removed a glove during a game only to find part of his left middle finger still inside, is still in danger of losing more of the digit, Coach Bruce Arians told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday night.

But the Cardinals are taking every precaution to make sure that doesn’t happen, Arians said.

That’s why Johnson was pulled out of practice last week after banging his hand in practice last week, days after the injury occurred against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 22, and did not play in Sunday’s victory over the Buccaneers.

“There was a slight infection after the first hit, when they had the cast on,” Arians said.

“There’s no telling what germs you’re trapping in there when you ball it up and put the cast on. The stitches are still there. He could evidently lose more of the digit if he bangs it too much, and with any infection they could have to take more off. We’re going to be careful with it.”

Johnson will soon be wearing a different cast, but his playing status for this week’s game against Carolina is unknown, according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports on MSN Canada.
