MLB All-Star game to include Trout, Kershaw, maybe Puig, Gonzalez

Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw will be making his third consecutive All-Star game appearance and Angels outfielder Mike Trout his second.

And rookie sensation Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers still has a chance of making his first.

Puig, who has played only 31 games in the majors, was among the five players on the National League ballot for the final spot on the team.

To make it, he’ll have to win out over Dodgers teammate Adrian Gonzalez as well as San Francisco outfielder Hunter Pence, Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman and Washington shortstop Ian Desmond.

Puig, an outfielder, received 842,915 write-in votes in the regular All-Star balloting, the most since Freddy Sanchez got 856,685 in 2006.

Kershaw received the second-most votes of any NL pitcher, behind only New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey, who is expected to get the start.

Trout received the second most fan votes among American League outfielders behind Baltimore’s Adam Jones, and Trout led the players’ voting.

Voting for the final roster spot in each league will take place in the next five days. Fans can vote at MLB.com, club Internet sites and by mobile phone.

The All-Star game will be played at New York’s Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16, and will be televised by Fox.
