Watch Mike Tyson return Evander Holyfield’s ear in new Foot Locker ad

Mike Tyson really seems to be taking his quest for redemption seriously.

In his latest effort to make amends for the mistakes of his past, the former heavyweight champion has returned the portion of Evander Holyfield’s ear he bit off during their 1997 bout.

“I kept that in formaldehyde,” Tyson tells Holyfield upon handing him a small box containing what is supposed to be the body part he spit onto the mat in front of a stunned world watching it all take place on TV more than 16 years ago.

Of course, it’s all a spoof, part of Foot Locker’s very funny new commercial for its so-called Week of Greatness.

It starts with Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers declaring it “feels like all is right with the world,” then imagining such scenarios as former NBA star Dennis Rodman moving to North Korea for good, broadcaster Craig Sager burning all of his ugly outfits and NFL legend Brett Favre declaring “a man’s got to know when to walk away.”

But the highlight is definitely the bit with the two boxers, which starts with Tyson showing up on Holyfield’s doorstep holding a small box and ends with the former rivals in an embrace.

The ad comes on the heels of Tyson’s recent memoir, “The Undisputed Truth,” in which he comes clean about his ugly past, including a whole lot of sex, drugs and violence. The Times’ Hector Tobar called the book “a masterpiece of depravity and confessional honesty.”

But while he definitely seems earnest about making things right, Tyson is also showing he can have a sense of humor about it all as well. Kudos to Holyfield as well for taking part in the sendup -- and for allowing Tyson that close to his ear again.
