The top 25 @ 140: Which college teams lead in Twitter followers?
The Academic Progress Rate reports were released Tuesday, and they are important to some because they monitor the education status for our fine collegiate “student athletes.”
Schools that don’t meet certain standards are subject to banishment from postseason play.
Just as important to me in this social network age, though, were the recent rankings of college teams by Twitter followers.
Not surprisingly, the Southeastern Conference dominated the football rankings, although Michigan came it at No. 1 with 138,905 followers.
LSU was second and led six SEC football schools in the top 10.
Here is the complete list for all sports. These are Twitter numbers garnered from sanctioned athletic departments.
North Carolina dominates the top spot in men’s basketball and LSU is tops in baseball.
Conspicuously missing is the Pac-12 Conference in major sports. USC does not rank in the top 25 in football (say what?) and UCLA, winners of 11 national titles, is a Twitter no-show in basketball.
You Bruin hoops fans need to get with the Twitter program fast, but please heed John Wooden’s words: “Be quick, but don’t hurry.”
In fact, there are no Pac-12 football teams in the Twitter top 25 and Oregon, at No. 24, is the only representative in men’s basketball.
The only Pac-12 sport at No. 1 on the list is Washington’s rowing team. (Makes watery sense being so close to Puget Sound).
Michigan’s sanctioned account leads the nation in Twitter followers in football, women’s and men’s tennis, swimming and diving and women’s golf. #GoBlue.
