Liverpool and Chelsea to play summer friendly at the Rose Bowl

European soccer giants Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain will join current English Premier League leader Leicester City in Southern California this summer to play in the International Champions Cup.

The 10-team tournament -- which will also feature Spain’s Real Madrid and Barcelona, German champion Bayern Munich, and Italy’s A.C. Milan and Inter Milan -- kicks off July 23 in Scotland while the U.S. games begin the following day with PSG playing Inter Milan in Eugene, Ore.

The Rose Bowl game, scheduled for July 27, will match English clubs Liverpool and Chelsea. A second Southern California game, set for July 30, will feature PSG and Leicester City. The site for that game has not be determined.

“The competition and clubs involved this year speaks to the continued growth and success the International Champions Cup has experienced in its four-year history,” Charlie Stillitano, chairman of Relevent Sports, the company organizing the tournament, said in a statement. “This is the best roster of teams in ICC history and having them start their 2016-2017 campaign playing against each other will be a treat for both fans and the players.

“Matches like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at MetLife Stadium and Chelsea vs. Liverpool at [the] Rose Bowl demonstrates the elite competition the ICC stands for. We are continuing to set the gold standard for soccer in America and abroad and are excited for summer to start.”

However, with a full slate of major international tournaments -- including the Euros in France and the Copa America in the U.S. -- also scheduled this summer, it’s unlikely many of the teams in the ICC will have their full squads available. That will probably mean Real Madrid without Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona without Lionel Messi and PSG without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

July 30: Barcelona vs. Celtic at Aviva Stadium at Dublin, Ireland; Chelsea vs. Real Madrid, U.S. venue TBA; Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, N.C.; Liverpool vs. A.C. Mila at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara; Paris Saint-Germain vs. Leicester City, Southern California venue TBA

Additional International Champions Cup games will also be played in both China and Australia, featuring Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.
