Johnny Manziel will not be arrested despite claims he hit ex-girlfriend

Despite allegations that he struck his ex-girlfriend, troubled Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has not been arrested and two Texas police departments have closed their cases on a possible assault.

Manziel, who will be released by the Browns next month after two turbulent NFL seasons, was being investigated for allegedly striking Colleen Crowley last weekend. She told police in Fort Worth that Manziel struck her “several times” and that he acted “as if he were on some kind of drugs,” but she maintained he was not intoxicated.

Fort Worth police provided the first details Thursday of the alleged altercation Saturday night between Crowley and Manziel.

Crowley told police that Manziel was “aggressive” toward her after they were out with friends at the Zaza Hotel in Dallas. She said he struck her, including once in the left ear, before they drove back to her Fort Worth apartment.

Crowley said she later fled her apartment in an attempt to get away from Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M.

Crowley said Manziel insisted on driving her home to Fort Worth because he did not want her to drive intoxicated.

On the ride home, she told police that Manziel struck her several times but she was “somewhat vague on the details of the assault,” according to the report, which included numerous redactions in the narrative.

Crowley told police that she later ran to a neighbor’s place for help in an attempt to get away from Manziel, who fled the scene on foot.

After Crowley informed police she was concerned for Manziel’s well-being, they used a helicopter to try to locate the 23-year-old.

Police also tried calling both Manziel and his parents, who could not be reached. An officer finally contacted Manziel’s father, Paul, who said he had seen his son and that “he was doing fine.”

Manziel told TMZ Sports that he did not hit Crowley.

“It didn’t happen,” Manziel said. “I’m completely stable. I’m safe and secure.”

Sgt. Steve Enright said Fort Worth police determined “no reported criminal offense occurred” within the city’s jurisdiction.

Dallas police issued a statement Thursday night saying they conducted a follow-up investigation and Manziel’s case is closed.

The Browns will cut Manziel when NFL teams can make roster moves in March.

“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” wrote Sashi Brown, the Browns’ vice president of football operations, recently in a statement. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules.”

In October, police in Avon, Ohio, were called after Manziel got into a heated argument while driving with Crowley, who at the time was his girlfried. She told police that Manziel was violent, banging her head into the car’s window. The couple admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the day, but Manziel was not arrested and was allowed to leave with Crowley.

Other high-profile incidents included:

--One month after he was drafted with the 22nd overall pick, Manziel was photographed swigging champagne as he floated on an inflatable white swan in a nightclub’s pool in Austin, Texas. It was the first of many photos of Manziel that went viral on social media, but this one was the most memorable for being both bizarre and brash.

--Before training camp opened in 2014, a clearly intoxicated Manziel was photographed talking into a money phone, and the Browns were disturbed by an image of him holding a rolled up dollar bill in a Las Vegas bathroom.

--During his second exhibition game, Manziel flipped his middle finger toward Washington’s sideline as he jogged back to the huddle following an incomplete pass. Manziel was fined $12,000 by the NFL for the profane gesture.

--Manziel skipped Cleveland’s walk-through practice and a medical treatment before the team flew to Baltimore for the 2014 season finale. The Browns didn’t know where he was and had to send security personnel to his downtown apartment to wake him.

--The late nights caught up with Manziel, who entered Caron, a rehab facility in Pennsylvania specializing in treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. Manziel spent 73 days under care, and upon his release, he apologized to the Browns and their fans and vowed to “regain everyone’s trust and respect. I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say.”
