IndyCar’s Mikhail Aleshin suffers multiple injuries in Fontana crash
IndyCar rookie Mikhail Aleshin suffered several injuries in a multicar crash Friday night during a practice run at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, IndyCar said.
The 27-year-old Russian driver had broken ribs, a broken right clavicle, a concussion and unspecified chest injuries, IndyCar said.
He was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
The crash occurred as drivers held their final practice ahead of the MAVTV 500 on Saturday night, the season finale of the Verizon IndyCar Series. The cars travel in excess of 200 mph at the two-mile Fontana oval.
Aleshin’s car spun in Turn 4 and the car of Charlie Kimball slammed into Aleshin’s car at full speed. Aleshin’s car then sailed into the catch fence, pinwheeled and fell back to the track.
The cars of Marco Andretti, Sebastien Bourdais, Jack Hawksworth and Sebastian Saavedra also were collected in the wreck. None of the other drivers was hurt.
There was no immediate word from Aleshin’s team on whether it would use a substitute driver for the race. Aleshin had qualified to start the race in eighth position.
