Hope Solo speaks out on her suspension from U.S. soccer team
Goalkeeper Hope Solo, reinstated to the women’s national soccer team last weekend after a 30-day suspension, told “Good Morning America” that she made “a horrible choice” when she got into a van with husband Jerramy Stevens for a ride that ended with his arrest on suspicion of DUI.
Solo, a two-time Olympic champion and the national record-holder with 78 shutouts, had been cleared of domestic abuse charges just days before the predawn incident in Manhattan Beach last month. Although Solo was a passenger in the van, the episode led to her suspension from the team.
“Clearly I wasn’t thinking,” Solo told “GMA” anchor Robin Roberts. “It was a horrible choice. I think I just wasn’t in a good place emotionally to even make a decision.
“That’s not an excuse. But it was stupid.”
Solo missed two friendlies during her absence. The U.S. lost to France, 2-0, and beat England, 1-0. On Saturday, she was one of 25 U.S. players called up for next month’s Algarve Cup tournament in Portugal.
“I’m not going to be too hard on myself right now,” said Solo, who teared up at times in the interview. “Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody learns from them -- hopefully -- and continues to work on themselves. I’m a work in progress.”
The U.S. opens play in the World Cup in June.
