Gabriella Then wins U.S. Girls’ Junior golf title

Gabriella Then, a 17-year-old from Upland High who will play for USC next season, defeated Lakareber Abe to win the U.S. Girls’ Junior golf championship on Saturday.

Then won the 36-hole final over Abe, 2 and 1, at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Then advanced to the finals with a 2-and-1 victory over Megan Khang of Rockland, Mass., on Friday.

Then, who won the prestigious Scott Robertson Memorial junior tournament at Roanoke (Va.) Country Club in May, has played in the U.S. Women’s Open three of the last four years, missing the cut each time.

Abe, who is also 17 and will be a senior at Angleton (Texas) High, was attempting to become the first black female to win an individual title in a U.S. Golf Assn. championship event. She has committed to Alabama.

Tiger Woods, Bill Wright and Alton Duhon are the only black golfers to win USGA championships.

Scottie Scheffler, a 17-year-old two-time state high school champion from Dallas, won the U.S. Junior Amateur boys’ title on Saturday. He defeated Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif.
