Eagles receiver Riley Cooper: ‘This is the lowest of the lows’

PHILADELPHIA -- Saying he is “extremely embarrassed, extremely hurt, and extremely sorry for my actions,” Philadelphia Eagles receiver Riley Cooper apologized Wednesday for a video that showed him using a racial slur at a recent concert.

“I’m disgusted and I’m sorry,” said Cooper, speaking to a cluster of reporters outside team headquarters. “That’s not the type of person I am. I wasn’t raised that way. I’ve got a great mom and dad at home. They’re extremely, extremely disappointed in me.”

The apparent cellphone video, which surfaced on the Internet earlier in the day, shows Cooper at a Kenny Chesney concert June 8 at Lincoln Financial Field. After a confrontation with an African American security guard, an agitated Cooper said: “I will jump that fence and fight every ... in here.”

Cooper confirmed he had been drinking but said that was not an excuse. The wideout said he was alone at the concert, which was attended by some teammates and Coach Chip Kelly.

Cooper said he was fined by the team and was willing to accept any punishment the club deemed appropriate.

“This is the lowest of the lows,” he said. “This isn’t the type of person I want to be portrayed as. This isn’t the type of person that I am.”

Said Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie: “We are shocked and appalled by Riley Cooper’s words. This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society. He has accepted responsibility for his words and his actions.”

Cooper is a significant player for the Eagles, especially after receiver Jeremy Maclin’s season-ending knee injury.
