Darrius Heyward-Bey doesn’t remember hit that led to injury

Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey talked to the media Friday and said he doesn’t remember the hit last Sunday by Steelers safety Ryan Mundy that left him unconscious and with a sprained neck.

On top of that, Heyward-Bey said that he harbors no ill will toward Mundy: “That’s just football. I signed up to put on pads and go out there. That’s what happens out there. People get hit; people get hurt.”

Heyward-Bey, who is doubtful to play against the Broncos on Sunday in Denver, has traded text messages with Mundy, who collided helmet-to-head in the end zone with the Raiders receiver. Heyward-Bey fell to the turf and lay motionless for nearly 10 minutes. He was carted off to applause as he raised his right hand and gave a thumbs-up.

“I don’t remember any of it,” Heyward-Bey said of the hit and aftermath, until “riding off on the cart.”

Oakland Coach Dennis Allen said Heyward-Bey has not passed all the concussion tests in order to practice.

“He’s made a lot of progress,” Allen said. “Obviously, he’s doubtful this week. The biggest determining factor is we want to make sure that he’s fully recovered and ready to go before we put him out there on the field. That’s really for the doctors to determine when he passes all the NFL protocol for concussions.”

For now, Heyward-Bey is concentrating on the basics.

“So far I’ve been able to walk, talk and eat,” Heyward-Bey said. “Right now I’m just trying to go through the process of trying to get everything right. I’m in tune to what’s going on. I don’t want to say I’ve been around for everything, but I’ve been in tune with what’s going on.”
