Calgary Flames’ arena heavily damaged by floods
The Calgary Flames have released several photos of the devastation caused by flood damage inside their home rink, the Scotiabank Saddledome, and a club official described the state of the ice-level area as “a total loss” after water had reached to about the eighth row of seats.
One look at the second picture — looking at the top of the tunnel where players usually enter the ice — gives perspective on how awful the impact will be in the arena.
“We’re ordering everything, including hockey equipment, right now,” club President Ken King told reporters at a news conference Saturday. However, he added, “We’re going to be ready for the opening of the season.”
Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in and around Calgary. About 100,000 people have been evacuated and roads have been closed in the southern part of the province of Alberta. Three people reportedly have died.
Flames forward Ben Hanowski was among those evacuated, and he described his experience to the Calgary Sun.
Here’s hoping everyone stays safe, that the city can recover quickly and that the Flames can get their arena back in time for next season.
