The competition to host the 2024 Summer Olympics is beginning to take shape with a number of developments among the four candidates.

Just days after LA 2024 officials announced a proposal to house athletes at UCLA, Budapest municipal council members on Wednesday approved a venue plan for their city, pushing aside calls for a referendum on the bid.

The Hungarian capital would have seven venue clusters and five individual sites, including a new 60,000-seat stadium, a large tennis complex and temporary facilities. Some events would be held outside the city.

Opposition parties within the country had demanded a referendum, but the council rejected that idea.

Budapest is considered a long shot, with Los Angeles and Paris seen as early front-runners. Another candidate, Rome, is searching for a new international consultant after parting ways with a British firm earlier this month.

The 2024 bidding process will continue with cities scheduled to submit their first set of “deliverables,” or plans, to the International Olympic Committee in February. The IOC will select a host in late 2017.
