Bakersfield Condors hope Justin Bieber can deliver hits on ice

Well, he is Canadian…

The Bakersfield Condors of the minor-league ECHL have offered an amateur tryout contract to pop singer Justin Bieber, with the intention of beefing up their offense — or, more likely, of getting a lot of web hits and attention.

Bieber has skated before -- and in this video provided by the Condors he’s skating with the Maple Leafs -- but his best role probably would be singing the anthem before games.

Matt O’Dette, the team’s head coach and director of hockey operations, said in a statement released by the team Bieber offers a rare combination of skill and toughness. The team thoughtfully provided his “stats,” though they’re not the usual hockey stats.

“We share a common Canadian heritage since we both hail from Ontario,” O’Dette said. “I’ve scouted some video of him online skating with my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he could provide some elusive speed up front for us.

“Plus, he’s a right-handed shot, which we’ve been looking to add. I think if we paired him on a line with [Robby] Dee and [Peter] Boyd we’d be tough to beat.”

The Condors are known for their community charity endeavors and for off-the-wall promotions, including a Charlie Sheen night. Here’s the rest of the team’s statement on Bieber.

No word on whether Bieber will take the Condors up on their offer, but the team’s website reportedly crashed during the day as Bieber fans swamped the site for information.
