Barry Bonds to return to Pittsburgh to honor Andrew McCutchen

Barry Bonds, long reviled by many in Pittsburgh after leaving the Pirates after the 1992 season to sign a free-agent deal with the San Francisco Giants, will get a chance to make amends Monday.

Bonds, now a special instructor with the Giants, will present Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen with his National League MVP award before the Pirates play the Chicago Cubs.

Pirates President Frank Coonelly joined Starkey and Mueller to explain the thinking behind this move and how it all came together.

“He’s a great former Pirate, having won two of his seven MVP awards in Pittsburgh, starting his career with us, and we thought it was time to bring Barry back and to celebrate our past along with our future,” Pirates President Frank Coonelly told radio station WFAN in Pittsburgh.

Bonds won’t be the only great former Pirate on hand. Dick Groat, the shortstop on the 1960 World Series championship team and longtime Pirates manager Jim Leyland will also take part in pre-game festivities.
