American bicycle racer Amy Dombroski dies after training accident

American cyclist Amy Dombroski died Thursday after being hit by a truck while training in Belgium, the cyclo-cross team Telenet-Fidea has reported.

The 26-year-old native of Jericho, Vt., who became part of the Boulder, Colo., cycling community, has been racing with the Belgium-based team since 2012, according to Bloomberg News.

“It is terrible, terrible news,” said Corne Lepoeter, president of Telenet’s development team. “We are all so sad.”

Dombroski had competed in the Gran Prix of Gloucester in Massachusetts earlier this week -- finishing eighth one day and 11th the other -- and joined her team in Belgium on Tuesday.

She was following a scooter as part of her training Thursday when the accident occurred on a country road in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. The scooter driver was not injured.

The 52-year-old truck driver is said to have not been under the influence of alcohol.

Dombroski was a three-time under-23 national cyclo-cross champion, according to Velonews. Her team reports that she was engaged to marry motocross racer Ryan Rozinski.

She appears to have left behind many friends in the cycling community.

“She did stuff because she loved it and because it was good for her,” Boulder cyclist Mara Abbott said. “ So many of us waste time hemming and hawing and not doing what we should be doing and what our heart says. Amy didn’t do that.”

Jamey Driscoll, a professional cyclist who was a childhood friend of Drombroski’s, added: “She was always charismatic, but she was much more outgoing when she was cycling. She was personable and talkative. It didn’t really matter who you were, or whatever.

“She was just as happy to see me, who she’s known for a very long time, as someone she’d just met and was into cycling at a bike race. And that’s really cool.”
