OK, the second part isn’t true (not that I know of, anyway), but it wouldn’t be all that surprising considering the way all of Australia seems to be reacting after a native claimed the coveted green jacket for the first time.

“By any means, this is a historic day for Australian sport,” Prime Minister Julia Gillard said. “All Australians will be marveling in [Scott’s] achievement and thinking of him. Adam, Australia’s incredibly proud of you.”

Scott seemed to have all of Australia on his mind as well, exclaiming “Come on, Aussies!” when he birdied the 18th hole at Augusta during Sunday’s final round.

Still, there was one particular Aussie the 32-year-old was thinking of after winning his first major championship -- following two sudden-death playoff holes against Argentina’s Angel Cabrera -- golfing great Norman, who won two majors but had to settle for three runner-up finishes and three more third-place showings at the Masters.

“He inspired a nation of golfers,” Scott said of the 58-year-old Norman. “Part of this is for him because he’s given me so much time and inspiration and belief. I drew on that a lot.”

Norman was just as thrilled as the rest of Australia over Scott’s achievement.

“I’m over the moon,” he told the Associated Press. “Sitting there watching Adam, I had a tear in my eye. That’s what it was all about. It was Adam doing it for himself, and for the country.”

Scott added that a celebration with Norman is definitely in order.

“A phone conversation isn’t going to do it,” Scott said. “We’re pretty close. We’ll have to share a beer over this one.”

Sounds like a great idea -- just as soon as he finishes that celebratory bowl of fruit salad with those proud Australians the Wiggles (again, just kidding ... maybe).
