Pac-12 football: Arizona State upsets No. 24 Oregon; Washington, WSU cruise to wins
Freshman Brandon Ruiz kicked a 41-yard field goal with 2:33 left and Arizona State held on to upset No. 24 Oregon 37-35 on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz., in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams.
The win ended the Sun Devils’ 10-game losing streak to the Ducks.
Manny Wilkins completed 24 of 39 passes for 347 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores as Arizona State beat the Ducks for the first time since 2004. K’Neal Harry caught seven passes for a career-best 170 yards and a score.
The Ducks’ Justin Herbert completed 19 of 35 for 281 yards and three scores.
Oregon (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12), a 13-point favorite going into the game, trailed throughout by as many as 17 points until Herbert threw 51 yards to Jacob Breeland and scored on a 5-yard quarterback draw to put the Ducks up 35-34 with 6:41 to play.
But the Sun Devils responded.
Arizona State (2-2, 1-0) converted a crucial third-and-6 play on a 10-yard pass from Wilkins to Jalen Harvey to get Arizona State into range for the winning field goal.
The Ducks drove past midfield but, on fourth down, Herbert’s scramble fell just shy of enough for the first down.
Oregon had one more chance after forcing Arizona State to punt with 50 seconds to play but never got out of its own territory.
Herbert threw touchdown passes of 20 yards to Johnny Johnson III and 22 to Tony Brooks-James to cut the Arizona State lead to 31-28 with 4:33 still left in the third quarter.
No. 7 Washington 37, at Colorado 10: Jordan Miller’s two interceptions and Myles Bryant’s pick-six helped the Huskies overcame a slow start and hand the Buffaloes their first loss.
Myles Gaskin rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (4-0, 1-0), who didn’t manhandle Colorado (3-1, 1-1) from the start like they did in a 41-10 rout in last year’s Pac-12 championship.
That’s of little solace to the Buffaloes, whose self-inflicted wounds included a trio interceptions, several fumbled snaps and a too-early slide on third down by quarterback Steven Montez that led to a punt — which was blocked.
Washington outscored the Buffs 27-3 after halftime, sparked by Quinten Pounds coming down with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jake Browning between two defenders.
at No. 18 Washington State 45, Nevada 7: Luke Falk threw five touchdown passes to lead the Cougars to victory during their best start to a season in 16 years.
Washington State (4-0), which opened the 2001 season by winning its first seven games, piled up 560 yards of offense and five sacks.
The Cougars host No. 5 USC next Friday night in their biggest challenge of the young season. It will be their fifth straight home game.
Nevada was held to just 151 total yards as the Wolf Pack (0-4) fell to 0-17 on the road against opponents in the top 25. Nevada came in as a 28-point underdog.
Falk completed 36 of 47 passes for 478 yards and was not intercepted. Coach Mike Leach is 33-34 in his sixth season at Washington State.
