No. 19 Stanford falls to San Diego State; UW’s Dante Pettis ties punt-return TD record

Christian Chapman threw an -eighttouchdown pass to tight end David Wells with 54 seconds left, capping a wild ending sparked by a darkness delay in San Diego State’s 20-17 victory over No. 19 Stanford on Saturday night in San Diego.

Six plays before Wells’ score, the game was delayed nearly 25 minutes when most of the lights went out at 50-year-old San Diego Stadium.

The game resumed with the Aztecs on the Stanford 42, and SDSU quickly moved in for the score. On the winner, Chapman rolled right and found Wells, who slammed into Brandon Simmons and tumbled into the end zone.

Kameron Kelly intercepted Keller Chryst on the first play of the ensuing Stanford possession. As the clock ran down, thousands of SDSU fans rushed the field.

The comeback by SDSU (3-0) overshadowed a huge night by Stanford’s Bryce Love. He gained 184 yards on just 13 carries, including touchdown runs of 53 and 51 yards, plus a 47-yarder that set up a field goal.

Aztecs running back Rashaad Penny, the national rushing leader, had 175 yards in 32 carries, including a four-yard touchdown run.

at No. 6 Washington 48, Fresno State 16: Dante Pettis had four touchdowns including an NCAA record-tying eighth punt return touchdowns of his career, and No. 6 Washington finished off the undercard of its schedule with a 48-16 rout of Fresno State on Saturday night.

Pettis had touchdown receptions of 4 and 7 yards in the first half, and a 73-yard TD pass from Jake Browning on the second play of the second half to give Washington (3-0) a 48-7 lead. But it was his 77-yard punt return late in the first quarter that left Husky Stadium buzzing and put Pettis’ name into another record book.

Pettis caught the kick from Blake Cusick near the Washington sideline, shook one defender initially, hurdled another in the open field and finally stepped through a last tackle attempt. Pettis also got a key downfield block from Myles Bryant to complete the return and give Washington a 27-0 lead.

Pettis’ return was the eighth of his career, tying him with Antonio Perkins (Oklahoma) and Wes Welker (Texas Tech). Pettis also tied the NCAA record for consecutive games with a punt return touchdown at three. Pettis returned one 67 yards for a score in the season opener against Rutgers and had a 61-yard return last week against Montana.

Pettis wondered last week if teams would continue kicking to him. Fresno State (1-2) did and paid for it.

Aside from the punt return, Pettis also tied a career high with the three TD receptions. He was the recipient of another nearly flawless night from Washington quarterback Jake Browning, as the Huskies’ 27 first-quarter points was one off the school record.

Browning was 19-of-22 passing for 255 yards and four touchdowns and a passer rating of 243.7. Myles Gaskin added touchdown runs of 28 and 7 yards but Washington’s run game remains a concern headed into Pac-12 play next week. Gaskin also had an 8-yard touchdown reception in the final seconds of the first half to give Washington a 41-7 lead at the break.

at No. 21 Washington State 52, Oregon State 23: Luke Falk threw six touchdown passes — three to Tavares Martin Jr. — as the Cougars claimed their fourth consecutive victory over the Beavers.

Washington State (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) was coming off a come-from-behind, triple-overtime victory over Boise State.

Falk, the FBS active leader with 98 touchdown passes, completed 37 of 49 passes for 396 yards without an interception. Martin had 10 catches for 194 yards.

Jake Luton threw for 179 yards for Oregon State (1-3, 0-1), but he was carted off the field in the fourth quarter with an injury. The Beavers have lost 14 consecutive road games dating to 2014.

Ryan Nall rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns for the overmatched Beavers.

at California 27, Mississippi 16: Ross Bowers threw a touchdown pass and Cameron Goode returned an interception for a touchdown to seal the game as California won its third straight game to open the season under new coach Justin Wilcox, beating Mississippi 27-16 on Saturday night.

The Golden Bears (3-0) withstood two long TD passes by Rebels quarterback Shea Patterson but didn’t allow a score over the final 43 minutes to end the nonconference season undefeated. Cal has overcome second-half deficits in all three games this season and has outscored the opposition 57-13 after halftime.

The loss ended a long week for Ole Miss (2-1) after interim coach Matt Luke had to miss a day of practice to attend a hearing by the NCAA’s Committee of Infractions and then the team traveled to California for the second time in school history. The Rebels are accused of 21 recruiting violations.

Ole Miss then blew a nine-point halftime lead as Cal took the second-half kickoff and drove 72 yards to cut the deficit to 16-14 on a 19-yard TD pass to Vic Wharton III. Matt Anderson added two field goals for the Bears.

Oregon 49, at Wyoming 13: Royce Freeman ran for three touchdowns in the first half and the Ducks roughed up Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen drew representatives from 16 NFL teams to War Memorial Stadium, but it was the Ducks (3-0) who impressed. Freeman ran for 157 yards in 30 carries and turned a screen pass into a 50-yard gain. Justin Herbert passed for 251 yards and a score, and added a touchdown run.

As for Allen, in what could be his last game against Power Five competition, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior completed nine of 24 for 64 yards — his second-lowest total as a starter — and a 10-yard touchdown run. He fumbled late in the second quarter running a draw and Oregon’s Tyree Robinson returned the ball to the Cowboys 4. Kani Benoit scored on the next play to make it 42-10 at half.

at Utah 54, San Jose State 16: Tyler Huntley threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns -- three of them to Darren Carrington — and Utah sprinted past San Jose State 54-16 to keep the Utes unbeaten. Huntley became the first Utah QB since Brian Johnson, who led the 2008 Sugar Bowl champion squad, to have 300-yard passing games on back-to-back outings.

Carrington caught nine passes for 153 yards as the Utes (3-0) rolled up 501 yards on a cool, clear night.

The Spartans (1-3) used four quarterbacks and the third signal caller — Josh Love — was the charm. The sophomore passed for 183 yards and had several long connections with Bailey Gaither, who had a career-high 125 yards on eight receptions.

at Texas Tech 52, Arizona State 45: Nic Shimonek threw for six touchdowns, receiver Dylan Cantrell had the go-ahead score on a three-yard run in the final two minutes and the Red Raiders won another high-scoring duel with the Sun Devils.

Kalen Ballage had one TD for the Sun Devils after tying an NCAA record with eight scores in a 68-55 victory in the desert last year.

Manny Wilkins’ deep pass on fourth-and-30 was overthrown on the final Arizona State possession as the Sun Devils (1-2) fell short after rallying from 18 points down at halftime and 14 behind late in the third quarter. The Red Raiders started 2-0 for the fourth time in five seasons under coach Kliff Kingsbury.

at Colorado 41, Northern Colorado 21: The Buffaloes’ Steven Montez threw for a career-high 357 yards and four touchdowns in the first meeting between the schools since 1934.

Montez spread around the wealth by throwing touchdown strikes to Devin Ross , Shay Fields, Bryce Bobo and Jay MacIntyre. Colorado (3-0) turned the ball over twice deep in Northern Colorado territory to keep things interesting against the Bears (1-1).

Phillip Lindsay rushed for 151 yards and a score on a day when the defense struggled. The Buffaloes had two starters ejected for targeting — free safety Afolabi Laguda in the second quarter and defensive lineman Chris Mulumba in the fourth quarter.

Northern Colorado’s Jacob Knipp had 202 yards passing and three touchdowns, two to Alex Wesley.
