Angels, Joe Blanton agree to terms on two-year, $15-million deal

Blanton, 31, has an 83-75 career record and 4.37 earned-run average during his nine-year career in which he has pitched for the Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies and Dodgers.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder split last season between the Phillies and Dodgers, going 10-13 with a 4.71 ERA, 166 strikeouts and 34 walks in 191 innings and earning $8.5 million in salary.

It was unclear Wednesday evening whether the signing of Blanton would affect the Angels’ pursuit of free-agent starters such as Zack Greinke, Anibal Sanchez, Kyle Lohse or Brandon McCarthy.

The signing would give the Angels six potential starters in Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Tommy Hanson, Blanton, Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams.

Wednesday’s addition of left-hander Sean Burnett, who agreed to terms on a two-year, $8-million deal, gives the Angels five quality relievers, and Williams would be a strong candidate for a long-relief spot.
