More gold for Mo: Farah wins men’s 5,000 to claim distance double

LONDON -- Mo Farah of Britain became only the seventh man to win a distance double in the same Olympics, holding off a late challenge to win the 5,000 meters Saturday while fans at the Olympic Stadium waved flags and screamed in a patriotic frenzy.

Farah, who won the 10,000 earlier in the Games, was timed in 13 minutes, 41.66 seconds. After he crossed the finish line he put his hands to his head in disbelief, then dropped to the track and touched his forehead twice to the surface. He then did several situps, showing that he had plenty of energy left even after his grueling race.

He followed that with a victory jog around the stadium with a British flag draped on his back. At one point, he stopped to take a photo with his wife and daughter and a flag emblazoned with the words, “Fly Mo.”

Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia was second in 13:41.98 with Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa of Kenya third in 13:42.36. Bernard Lagat of the U.S. was fourth at 13:42.99. Galen Rupp of the U.S., who was the silver medalist in the 10,000, finished seventh Saturday in 13:45.04. The third American entrant, Lopez Lomong, was 10th in 13:48.19.
