London Olympics: What to watch for on Tuesday
There are seemingly thousands of Olympics events each day. Here is what to look for on Tuesday:
TRACK AND FIELD
The women’s 100-meter hurdles is the marquee event. Lolo Jones, Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells all advanced to the semifinal and could find themselves in the final later this evening. Other finals are the men’s high jump, men’s discus and men’s 1,500. The second qualifying round of the women’s 200 with Carmelita Jeter, Sanya Richards-Ross and Allyson Felix is also scheduled.
GYMNASTICS
Jordyn Wieber looks to redeem herself in the women’s floor exercise. Wieber was the defending world champion in the all-around but a sub-par performance kept her out of the competition last week. Gabrielle Douglas won the all-around. Alexandra Raisman is also to be in the floor exercise. Douglas is to be competing in the balance beam competition.
BASKETBALL
It will no doubt be less exciting than the U.S.-Canada women’s soccer game, but the countries are set to square off in women’s basketball. The U.S. has barely been tested through its first five games. Canada is 2-3. The U.S. is playing in the much easier Group A. The last time the Canadian women have beaten the U.S. in any level of basketball competition was in 1975.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
It could be an all-U.S. final on the women’s side if things break right. April Ross and Jennifer Kessy face Juliana Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil in one semifinal. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh play Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China in the other. Both U.S. men’s teams, including the favored Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rodgers, have already been eliminated.
