London Olympics: Athletes’ parade of fun (and fashion)

There are so many things you can absolutely count on during the Olympics parade of nations: first off, Bermuda shorts worn by athletes from Bermuda.

And odd-looking head gear, foisted upon a country by some fashion-challenged wardrobe designer. Then again, royals have produced some interesting hats over the years and would probably approve of some of the choices at the parade.

There was doubles star Max Mirnyi, the flag bearer for Belarus. The outspoken, fun-loving mother of one of his tour tennis mates felt moved to comment on her Twitter account.

Judy Murray, the mother of Wimbledon finalist Andy Murray, referred to Mirnyi by his nickname, the Beast, tweeting: “Woooo. The Beast looking fab leading out Belarus. Shame about the hat.”

She stayed silent about the Bulgarians -- checkered blazers and hats were a bit much. Perhaps the checkered caps were an ode to the cab drivers around here.

Checkered or cheeky?

It was the latter for the Czech Republic. The Czech athletes wore bright blue rain boots and toted umbrellas -- a nice shot at the legendary wet British weather.

Of course, if the French team had done something like that, it would have turned into a diplomatic controversy with screaming tabloid headlines.
