LONDON -- American David Boudia set the tone early, unleashing one of his best dives of the session and opening the 10-meter platform semifinal at the Olympics with a statement.

The back armstand double somersault with a 2-1/2 twist carried a 3.6 degree of difficulty. And Boudia hit it, scoring 88.20 points.

That momentum carried him into Saturday night’s 12-man final at the Aquatics Centre. Boudia, who had grabbed the last qualifying spot after a so-so performance in the preliminaries, had the third-highest point total in the morning semifinals.

Finishing first and second in the semifinal were reigning world champion Qiu Bo of China and his countryman Lin Yue. American Nicholas McCrory also made the final, qualifying seventh.

The competitiveness of the semifinal underlined the fact that defending Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham of Australia missed the cut for the final, placing 13th.

Boudia and McCrory won the bronze medal earlier at the London Games in the synchronized 10-meter platform event.
