Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni has been impressed with the play of Pau Gasol in training camp.

“Pau is way ahead of what I thought he might be coming back from surgery; he’s playing really well,” D’Antoni said.

Gasol underwent procedures on his knees in May to help alleviate tendinosis. He spent almost the entire summer resting and rehabbing.

“I thought coming off injury that he’d sit down half a practice, maybe skip practice -- he’s done everything, all the time,” D’Antoni said. “And he’s been sharp.”

Gasol missed 33 games last season, mostly with knee and foot issues.

“I thought I was going to be more limited too,” Gasol said. “I basically started running on the court three weeks ago. I haven’t done, until this point, any basketball stuff with other players with contact. So far it’s been good.”

The Lakers center/forward admitted he’s still trying to get his timing back after so much time off.

“I’m rusty,” Gasol said. “I’m having way too many turnovers. I’m still having to get a good feel for the ball and the game. Every day I pick it up and improve.”

The Lakers have limited Gasol to one practice a day when the team has two-a-day sessions. The team will still monitor his knees closely.

“I’m still not jumping,” he said. “My goal is to be 100% by opening night. Little by little, I think I’m making progress.”

Gasol hasn’t had a summer off for as long as he can remember.

“I started when I was 16 [with the Spanish National Team],” Gasol said. “I feel refreshed, mentally and physically both.”
