Lakers talk musical tastes
The angst of an opening-day defeat has certainly left Lakers fans rattled.
For a slight diversion before Wednesday night’s battle in Portland against the Trail Blazers, how about some musical suggestions from Metta World Peace, Devin Ebanks and Dwight Howard?
All three spoke with Jason Lipshutz of Billboard.com about their taste in music. Unsurprisingly, some of World Peace’s choices were . . . surprising.
Naturally, he mentioned his own tracks first, “Champion” and “Work Out,” that’s a given.
“I listen to Victoria Spivey, who’s got a song called ‘Detroit Moan’ from [1936]. She was around during the Great Depression. I listen to Alberta Hunter, from the 1920s, who has a song called ‘How Long, Sweet Daddy, How Long.’ I love that song.”
Peace also described Dido as “pretty great,” noting “she paints great pictures, and not many people are able to do that with their words.”
While Peace said he doesn’t listen to rap, his all-time favorite, Lauryn Hill, dabbled in the genre.
Ebanks is partial to hip-hop artists like Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil Wayne. Over the summer he got together with Clippers forward Trey Thompkins and performer Devin Miles to record a track (and video) of their own.
So does he have plans to go into music as a secondary career?
“Nah, it was just a one-time thing,” Ebanks said Tuesday at Staples Center.
Howard favors Trey Songz and Big Sean along with non-hip-hop artists Ray LaMontagne and Sade.
The Lakers center also notes, “I think even Pau [Gasol] likes Drake a lot, if I’m not mistaken.”
