9 a.m., ESPN

Florida’s offense still runs like a clogged drain but easily avoided Kirk Herbstreit’s ESPN prediction last week that Toledo would pull the upset in Gainesville. This week: Kirk predicts California will break off and fall into the Pacific. No one can say when the NCAA will finally rule on Miami, but in the meantime the Hurricanes will keep running Duke Johnson into the line of scrimmage.

Eastern Michigan (1-0) at Penn State (1-0)

9 a.m., Big Ten Network

We’re still waiting — tick, tick, tick — for the inevitable collapse of Penn State football after the Jerry Sandusky scandal, yet Coach Bill O’Brien seems determined to not let it happen. Is it possible to say the future even looks bright after last week’s debut of Christian Hackenberg? The 18-year-old quarterback threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in Penn State’s win over Syracuse.

The Ducks gave new coach Mark Helfrich an easy first win last week against Nicholls State, but the second week looks more complicated following Virginia’s somewhat shocking win over Brigham Young in rain-soaked Charlottesville. D’Anthony Thomas had 128 rushing yards in his first game as the Oregon’s primary tailback. A win here and then at home against Tennessee will solidify the Ducks’ nonconference credentials entering Pac-12 play.

Buffalo (0-1) at No. 23 Baylor (1-0)

12:30 p.m., Prime: FSN2

It’s probably time to give Baylor credit for simply reloading every year under Art Briles. There was little drop off from Robert Griffin III to Nick Florence, and new quarterback Bryce Petty threw for 290 yards in a 69-3 win over Wofford. It was the most points Baylor has scored since 1929. The Bears have scored 118 points in two games dating to last year’s Holiday romp over UCLA.

Afternoon

No. 6 South Carolina (1-0) at No. 11 Georgia (0-1)

Star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has had more than a week to stew over his sub-par performance in South Carolina’s opening win over North Carolina. Clowney, dubbed by some the greatest defensive force in years, appeared to lack conditioning. Georgia needs a bounce back after last week’s three-point loss to Clemson in which the Bulldogs lost receiver Malcolm Mitchell (ACL) to a post-touchdown celebration injury. And it wasn’t even his touchdown.

2 p.m.: Portland State at California, Pac-12.

3 p.m.: Syracuse at Northwestern, BTN; Navy at Indiana, BTN1; Southern Mississippi at Nebraska, BTN2.

3:30 p.m.: Louisiana Lafayette at Kansas State, FS1.

This is the kind of game that keeps Longhorns fans up at night. Texas is the better team, but BYU is always tough at home and will be eager to avenge an opening loss at Virginia.

Evening

No.14 Notre Dame (1-0) at No. 17 Michigan (1-0)

5 p.m., ESPN

Is it a rivalry or not? Irish Coach Brian Kelly first said it wasn’t a traditional rivalry. He must have been thinking of 2003 and 2007 when Notre Dame lost at Ann Arbor by the identical scores of 38-0. That’s not a rivalry, but Kelly then pivoted with “It’s a great and historic rivalry that we’ll be playing this Saturday so let’s get that out of the way.” You be the judge. The teams first met in 1887 and are playing a 41st time. Michigan leads the series, 23-16-1. Michigan and Notre Dame have “traditionally” been the top two schools in all-time victories and winning percentage. Verdict: sounds like a rivalry.

5 p.m.: Hawaii at Oregon State, Pac-12.

7:30 p.m.: Arizona at UNLV, CBSSN; Washington State at USC, FS1.

San Jose State (1-0) at No. 5 Stanford (0-0)

8 p.m., Pac-12 Network

A nice nightcap for folks lucky enough not to be caught in the mudslinging contest between DirecTV and the Pac-12. Stanford finally starts a season filled with high expectations but San Jose State proved last year in its 17-14 loss that it takes these Bay Area battles very seriously. The match-up to watch will be Spartans’ quarterback David Fales, a potential first round NFL draft choice, trying to pick apart one of the nation’s best defenses.
