Jets name Geno Smith their starting quarterback
The New York Jets should hope that rookie Geno Smith doesn’t telegraph passes as badly as they do.
In a move that surprised no one, the Jets on Wednesday named Smith as the starting quarterback for Sunday’s opener against Tampa Bay.
Although the move was long predicted, it could be the official beginning of the end for Mark Sanchez, who suffered a bruised shoulder in the third preseason game and is expected to sit out multiple weeks.
Smith, a second-round pick, also had a rough outing in that exhibition game against the New York Giants, his first start. He had four turnovers, including three interceptions in the first half.
The Jets this week signed journeyman quarterback Brady Quinn, a move some see as a precursor to eventually parting ways with Sanchez.
