49ers’ Aldon Smith charged with felony weapons possession
The problems are stacking up for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.
Smith has been charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.
He is on indefinite leave of absence from the team while he undergoes treatment for substance abuse, a development that came after his DUI arrest last month.
The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office said Smith, 24, is expected to surrender on his own this month.
Smith set a 49ers record with 19 1/2 sacks last season, and Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday the two have exchanged text messages.
“Heard that things are going very well,” Harbaugh said. “Very positive reports back.”
