Report: Wes Welker still mad at Patriots for Game 1 reduced role

Wes Welker apparently doesn’t buy into the philosophy that all’s well that ends well.

The soon-to-be free agent was the New England Patriots’ top receiver in 2012. His 118 catches were tied for the second-most in the NFL and his 1,354 receiving yards were eighth-best in the league.

But a report Monday on Yahoo! Sports says Welker still hasn’t gotten over the fact that he was targeted for only five passes and had just three catches for 14 yards -- all season lows -- in the Patriots’ season opener, a 34-13 win over the Tennessee Titans.

That game still has Welker “a little miffed” and feeling “somewhat mild disdain” toward the Patriots, the report says. It adds that the receiver might believe his numbers would not have ended up so high if it weren’t for injuries to tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.

Sounds like the guy is a bit paranoid about his role on the team at this point. Or maybe he’s just a big baby.

Either way, the report goes on to suggest that those feelings might be holding up contract negotiations between Welker and the Patriots. Not to mention the fact that he could very well garner more money from another team in free agency.

All that may be true. But Welker could be on his way to becoming a local legend if he stays in New England. Plus, is he really going to find a situation better than having Tom Brady throw him the ball every week?

He might want to think long and hard before making any long-term decisions.
