49ers’ Brown learns of $2 million in lost pay on Twitter; fires agent

All Tarell Brown needed to do was show up for the San Francisco 49ers’ voluntary off-season workout program and he would have made $2.925 million in base salary this season.

He didn’t, and it’s going to cost him $2 million.

Brown, who is in the final year of his contract with San Francisco, said he wasn’t aware of the workout clause tied to his base pay. In fact, the cornerback found out about he lost $2 million on Twitter, according to the Associated Press.

Brown reached out to the 49ers and his agent Briand Overstreet after reading reports of his decreased wages. But alas, it was too late for Brown -- and his agent who he later fired.

“No one wants to leave money on the table,” Brown said. “If I would have known the clauses in my contract -- that’s what agents get paid to do, to orchestrate the contract and to let you know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts and OTAs and things of that sort. That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that, so in my opinion you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions. This is part of the business.”

Brown collected 57 tackles and 14 passes defensed in addition to making two interceptions during the 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl.
