RG3 injury: Redskins’ Robert Griffin III has surgery on right knee

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament and to see if there is any other damage in his right knee.

The surgery was conducted by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

Griffin sent out a tweet early Wednesday saying, “Thank you for your prayers and support. I love God, my family, my team, the fans, & I love this game. See you guys next season.”

The torn LCL requires a rehabilitation that will last into the start of next season. If it is determined that Griffin also has a torn anterior cruciate ligament, then his rehabilitation will last longer.

Griffin sprained the LCL in the 12th game of the season when he was hit by Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata at the end of a scramble. He tore the LCL on Sunday in a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Assn., said Tuesday that the union is looking into the Redskins’ handling of the quarterback’s injury. Smith said the union also is looking into the condition of the playing surface at FedEx Field, the Redskins’ home stadium, during Sunday’s game. Several players and coaches from both teams criticized the condition of the playing field after the game.
