Riley Cooper returns to the Philadelphia Eagles

Riley Cooper has run a comeback pattern, and few people might have predicted it would come this quickly.

The humiliated Philadelphia Eagles receiver is returning to the team just four days after announcing he planned to step away from the NFL to work on personal issues.

On Tuesday, the Eagles tweeted: “WR Riley Cooper has returned from his excused absence and is scheduled to practice with the team today.”

A video surfaced last week of an apparently intoxicated Cooper using a racial slur for black people while at a country music concert in June. When the video came to light and went viral, Cooper apologized profusely, saying he was “ashamed and disgusted” about his behavior. He was fined by the Eagles and agreed to work with behavioral specialists.

After Cooper apologized to the team, several Eagles players, among them quarterback Michael Vick, said they supported him and that they didn’t believe his words accurately reflected who he is as a person.

Not every member of the team supported Cooper, however, with running back LeSean McCoy and cornerback Cary Williams expressing reservations about trusting him again.

There is no denying that Cooper is an integral part of Philadelphia’s offense, especially with receiver Jeremy Maclin out for the season with a knee injury. A fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft, Cooper has 46 catches in 40 NFL games, but figures to be much more of a factor in this year’s offense.
