Boston bombings: Ex-Patriot Joe Andruzzi carries woman to safety

Joe Andruzzi doesn’t want a big deal made of this, so we’ll keep it short.

But the former NFL offensive lineman who won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2004 does deserve some credit -- as do countless others -- for his efforts during the tragedy at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Andruzzi, a cancer survivor whose foundation sponsors a team at the marathon each year, was near the finish line when the two explosions that killed three people and injured at least 170 others went off.

Brother of three New York City firefighters who came to the aid of victims of the 9/11 attacks back in 2001, Andruzzi acted in a similar manner during this tragedy, carrying an injured woman to safety amid the chaos.

Andruzzi’s act of heroism was captured by Boston Globe photographer Bill Greene, and the dramatic photo has received a lot of attention. Andruzzi later released this statement:

“Marathon Monday should be about uplifting stories, personal challenges and fundraising milestones, but today’s bombings irrevocably changed that.

“While I appreciate the interest in hearing our perspective on today’s horrific events, the spotlight should remain firmly on the countless individuals -- first responders, medics, EMTs, runners who crossed the finish line and kept on running straight to give blood, and the countless civilians who did whatever they could to save lives.

“They were the true heroes. Our thoughts prayers go out to all those affected by this senseless tragedy.”
